arcade fire
the new arcade fire album is really awesome IMO. i've been listening to it quite a bit this week, and am really into the first half of the album. i need to start listening to it in the middle so i can really get a good listen. it seems whenever i put on a record on itunes i always manage to walk away from it half way in. anyway, this is a cute animation i found on the tubes.

never going back again.
i think if i could listen to one song on repeat for this entire week it might be this one. this performance is just amazing, i have tried learning how to play this on the guitar countless times and cannot get the picking right. how lindsey buckingham plays and sings this at the same time breaks the space/time continuum. mind = blown. gets me every time.

bi bim bap for dinner!
i made some bi bim bap for dinner the other night with my roommate ryan, and his girlfriend lyndsey. it was so delicious and so simple to make. if you haven't tried it, i highly recommend it for lunch or dinner. it's a classic korean dish. make sure you have sesame oil, soy sauce and lots of hot sauce.
here's a run down on what we did,
2 cups brown rice
1 carrot, grated
1/2 pack snow peas
2 zucchini, steamed
steamed spinach
some mushrooms - lyndsey grabbed these at a korean market, i'm not sure which kind they are. you can use shitake if you can't find ones that look like these.
1/2 block extra firm tofu, grilled in olive oil/seasame oil
1 egg, sunny side up for the top of each bowl (if you're ryan, you can have 2)
put into a bowl and mix it up! i guarantee that you'll like it (unless you hate rice and vegetables)

garbage pickers!
on my way into work this morning, walking along queen street i see about 10 city of toronto workers with these pole-slicers and they are slicing open garbage bags and looking through the garbage bags that were left out on the street for pick up.
what i would like to know is, why the heck are the city workers looking through the garbage? what are they looking for?

last night was insane
the olympic hockey game last night was probably one of the most insane games i have ever watched. check news websites for those updates - i'm here to report on the insanity that was the streets last night. it's really amazing how a game can bring everyone in a city together. i was high-fiving and hugging perfect strangers on the streets, police and kids. it really felt nice to interact with so many people, who on any other day wouldn't look my way. it's funny how we work (or don't work) as a community. i'd love it if we could do things like that more often.
more pictures to come. this one however, i took on my phone and it's of a guy who was so excited, he climbed up onto the street light. he was escorted away by the police, but i doubt they charged him with anything. maybe a small fine, who knows?

shoveling

i think a snowy day really brings people together - neighbours in particular. it brings everyone outside at the same time and allows us to engage in conversation, which i think is pretty nice.
this one gentleman almost shoveled me right off the sidewalk because he was so concentrated on his work, and then we had a laugh together. then, slightly up the street another man stopped for me to pass by and said "well, it had to happen sometime." i like having conversations, even small ones with the people who live in my neighbourhood.
